Delta Park/Kenton Park Cross Workout Sep 22
Rode down to Delta Park and found conditions excellent for a quick and short cross workout. The grass was just getting mowed, so it was still holding most of last weekends rain, and the fresh grass was moist and spongey, so it grabbed the wheels and provided lots of resistance. There were still patches of mud and wet sand here and there, a little gravel, some tree litter, some loose dirt and a...

Cross Vegas Inspires...
Watching these guys dismount and mount their bikes, hop over uphill barriers and ride up run ups is an eye opener. I have so many skills to develop! They are so smooth!! I’m in awe, and more motivated than ever to get out there and practice my skills!!

The coolest bikes in Portland, hands down, are the ones being ridden all over Swan Island by these industrial workers. These bikes are true workhorses, and their riders the epitome of function over fashion purists. Check out the article and the slide show!

Hood River Double Cross Race Day #1
Got up at 7:30 and got my stuff together, threw the wheels on the bike, and the fender, dropped the kids off, ate some breakfast, fed the dog, and rolled out to meet Julien to drive to Hood River. Rode through amazing morning fog with the rest of the North Interstate Bike Commute Army to the Rose garden. crossed the steel bridge and met Julien at Burnside Plaza. Drove through more ground clouds...

Sandy Ridge Ride
I could go on calling these cross training rides, because my skills, stamina and strength improve with every ride, but this ride was about exploring a new trail complex and having fun with friends. Sandy Ridge is pretty tech, and super fun! We parked at the gate and rode up the road for 3.5 miles to the trailhead for the 338 trail. We rode what was open of the 338, and it rocked. A few mandatory...

Overtraining and over... resting
A friend once told me that I have to rest harder than I train. I have a mind that tends toward obsessive excess. So I’ve been resting, a lot. In fact, it’s driving me crazy. However, it’s giving me time to get my bike dialed in and fine tune my training plan. I’m looking forward to this weekend and the Hood River Double Cross! Should be a blast. We’re expecting a...

Epic Fail :)
Pain & Suffer’n Cross Race Today was a bust. And it’s all my fault. I read the schedule wrong and thought my race started at 1:15, when it started at 1:00. I got to the venue at 12:40, registered, got my bike together and my kit on, and took a warmup lap and then hopped into the bathroom for the obligatory pre-race evacuation of negative vibes. During my warmup lap they called the...

Pre-Race Rest Day
Taking the bike and the extra wheelset in to To at WTF Bikes to throw the freewheel on and get the brakes all tuned up and give her a once-over before tomorrow. Getting the pit wheels cleaned, trued and tires mounted as well. Enjoying this weather, and trying not to ride anywhere fast or far, in preparation for tomorrow. Should be a beautiful race tomorrow. Sunny skies, mid-70 temps, recent rain...

Cross Training Day #6
Spent the day watching Nia and Jack and crawling out of my skin to get out and ride. Had to wait until 5:30 to get out, by which time I was dragging. Finally got on the bike and got rolling to Powell Butte at 5:55. Rode up the Main Access Trail and found the Elderberry Trail closed due to construction, so I rode up the Wildhorse Trail. Stretched at the junction with the Orchard Trail Loop, and...

Pain & Suffer'n
Sunday is going to be my first cross race of the season, out in Hillsboro. It’s a dusty, brutal, agonizing 45 minute beatdown, and I’ll be racing fixed. My mounts and dismounts are pathetically slow in the road shoes, hopefully the new Look Quartz mountain pedals and Sidi Dominators I’ll be rocking at the race will make a difference. I’m looking forward to getting...

Cross Training Day #5
No run this morning like I’d planned. Nia was tired and so was I. Took Slims for a walk, and played inside for a few hours. Then loaded up the bike trailer with about 60 pounds of food, clothes, diapers, wipes, bike parts, tools, laptop, camera, shoes, and water and rode to Revolver and WTF. Wrenched on the new shoes and the bike for about an hour and then rode to Gresham on the Springwater....

Rest Day
Hung out with Nia at the ex-In-Laws last night and today, followed by dinner out at a Viet-Thai restaurant. It poured all day. It’s looking to be a really nice and really fast course this weekend, with all this rain. I think I’m going to run my gearing at 44x20 with a freewheel for the race. Tomorrow I’m taking Nia into town to pick up the freewheel and my new Dominators....

Cross Training Day #4
Woke up early with Nia and took her out to Smith Lake in the jogging stroller. I have no idea how far we went, but I ran for about 90 minutes. Meant to ride around town later, but it rained and Nia’s bike trailer doesn’t have good rain cover. We walked and played at the playground for a while instead. Not a great training day, but Nia and I had fun. Nutrition: 1 cup granola 1/2 cup...

Cross Training Day #3
Ended up being another mellowish training day. Hooked up with a friend to go check out some trails in Scappoose. They were steep, technical, contrived, and poorly laid out. But there was a lot of climbing, a ton of dismounts and run ups, some super technical descents, and some fast and rocky fire roads through mud and forests of nettles. For cross training it was kind of a bust, probably only got...

Cross Training Day #2
Took it kind of easy today, and I’m sure I’ll regret it on the 18th, but oh well. Rode 10 miles on the road to 71st and Division, then up to the top of Mt. Tabor on road and trail, then did three laps of Tabor on the trails, running some stairs climbing every hill I could climb. It was kind of crowded and I didn’t feel like I could go all out. Next time I’ll go later in the day or early in...

Cross Training Day #1
The Hood River Double Cross, http://www.obra.org/flyers/2010/hood_river_2x.html , is only 14 days away. I can’t wait to get my cast off to start preparing, especially since the Double Cross are two of the hardest races of the season. Why haven’t I been training all summer? Why did I wait until two weeks before to log day #1? Well, I was training, until I was hit by a car in the middle of a 50...
